How to Keep Your Building Clean

The prevention of the spread of infectious diseases requires everyone to do their part. Washing hands, covering coughs and sneezes, and keeping sick employees at home are all ways individuals can help stop the spread of viruses. As a property or business owner, you must go a step further in maintaining a clean environment where everyone feels safe.

1. Cleaning is the first step to keeping a facility and its occupants healthy. A cleaner simply aids in removing soil from a surface. Although cleaning does remove dirt from surfaces, it doesn’t necessarily kill the germs and bacteria on them.

A professional cleaning team is trained on the appropriate use of cleaning chemicals and wears personal protective equipment when necessary. Disposable gloves should be worn when cleaning.

Frequently touched surfaces should be routinely cleaned. These surfaces include doorknobs, shopping carts, keypads, light switches, countertops, handles, desks, phones, and faucets. High touch surfaces made of plastic or metal, such as railings, should also be cleaned routinely. Cleaning solutions often used are soap and water as it reduces the amount of dirt and impurities on the surface.

2. Sanitize surfaces to lower the number of germs on surfaces to levels that are considered safe by public health organizations. Facilities like schools, stores, and other public spaces can use a multi-purpose sanitizer.  A thorough cleaning and sanitizing program performed by a professional sanitizing crew can reduce bacteria to appropriate levels while providing a safer chemical program for your facility.

3. Disinfecting correctly is critical for a few reasons. Dirty surfaces can interfere with the effectiveness of disinfectants. The job of the disinfectant is to kill infectious fungi, bacteria, and viruses on hard environmental surfaces. To disinfect the right way every time, hire a professional to handle the job.  If not done properly, residue build-up will occur. Disinfectants are generally poor cleaners and leave sticky residue on surfaces, allowing them to get dirty again quickly.

It’s also important to select the right disinfectant. The EPA has a list of approved disinfectants. Any product that claims to kill bacteria, viruses, mold, or fungi must be registered with the EPA as a pesticide. The disinfectant liquid must remain on the surface for a specific amount of time-based on recommendations.

4. Disposal of gloves, gowns, and all PPE gear should be done carefully to avoid contamination of the cleaning technician and the surrounding area.  Biohazard waste should be disposed of by specialized personnel and sent to approved facilities to be thermally destroyed following local and state regulations. After your facility is cleaned and disinfected, anyone who has been cleaning must re-wash their hands.

Re-Open Your Business Safely

All businesses should follow reopening guidelines outlined by the CDC if they have been shut down or have reduced operations. Continue to keep occupants safe and healthy by setting up a routine cleaning program to continue cleaning and disinfection of your facility. This includes everyday practices that should already be put in place for all occupants of the building to maintain a healthy environment.

Your employees are important in keeping your business open, as are your customers. At Battle Born, we will make sure they are safe and not exposed to anything harmful.
